Do you know what you're really up against when you want to get pregnant soon?
Generally, the odds of getting pregnant in any given month is roughly 20%. And that's when you're doing everything exactly right. And those odds start decreasing in your 30's and 40's.
That was floating around in the back of mind, somewhere, but I was shocked when it was brought to the forefront of my conscious. I don't like those odds. I want something more like 99.99%.
The truth is, there's not really a way to raise it above that roughly 20% margin.
BUT.
I am willing to bet you are unwittingly lowering your odds to less than 10% on any given month!
How? By eating an unhealthy diet of trans fats, gluten, and processed foods - all known to rapidly decrease your chances of getting pregnant. Stress, dehydration, spikes in blood sugar, and overall poor lifestyle choices can also contribute.
This is actually fantastic news, because it means there are ways to instantly double, or even triple, your chances to get pregnant soon.
Here are some tips to get started:
1) Get a physical for both you and your partner. For women, make sure your thyroid is healthy, which can be a major factor in fertility issues. I would also recommend asking if you have a vitamin D deficiency.
Most people seem to have one, and the consensus is split. Some will say it has no bearing on your fertility, others say it has a huge influence for both men and women's fertility.
2) Get an annual pap smear and ask if your hormone levels need to be checked, if you could have fibroids, or if there's a chance your tubes are blocked or have other fertility issues. Once you have a relatively clean bill of health, you can focus on making changes you have control over like diet.
3) Take a pre-natal vitamin (at your doctor's permission) with folic acid. Studies have linked a severe folic acid deficiency with conception issues. And regardless, you need to build up your vitamin intake, because it can take months to store it in your body properly.
Remember that taking more vitamins that recommended can also do harm to you and an unborn baby. So don't try doubling up.
3) Stop using manufactured lubricant. Yep. Lubricants can create a hostile environment for sperm. There are natural alternatives I talk about over in the Regarding Intimacy and Resources and Recommendation pages.
4) Clean up your diet. Studies show many unexplained infertility issues are resolved within months. I know someone who went on a gluten free diet and got pregnant in 3 months, after she'd been trying for over 3 years. Trans fats can also destroy your chances on any given month.
It's also important to know what foods to eat and what areas you might be deficient in. Ask your doctor, or if you go to an acupunturist, they're probably already telling what you're lacking you based on the color of your tongue!
5) Try acupuncture or acupressure. I firmly believe that anyone can benefit from acupuncture if you stick with it for at least 2 or 3 months. Even doctors prescribe it for fertility issues.
6) Get rest and water. It sounds simple, but it's crucial. Your body doesn't function properly on no sleep and 1 glass of water a day. It needs both to function properly.
7) Maintain a healthy weight. Being significantly underweight or overweight is linked to fertility issues.
8) Cut back, or eliminate alcohol. For some women, even small amounts of alcohol will interfere with healthy ovulation.
9) Eat organic. There are gluten free, wheat free, trans fats free, and organic options out there that are absolutely delicious. Even Skippy peanut butter makes an organic option that doesn't require stirring like many of the drippy organic kinds on the market. Keep your eyes open, it's out there.
